Zersetzung

As Canada comes very close to spinning out of control (and I come very close to exploring a move to the US), it is becoming clearer that many of the methods utilized in East Germany by the Stasi, are now being implemented here. Someone who read ‘In Trudeau’s Kitchen’ sent the following term my way, largely because they realized that this was what I have experienced. They had experienced it in Canada, too. This is one of the reasons that a record number of Canadians left the country in 2025. Not all are being targeted in this specific way, but most are feeling radically unsafe in Canada. As the battle between freedom and control accelerates worldwide in the coming years, it may be of value to know about these practices. Sometimes just knowing that there is a word to describe the oppression is liberating.

Zersetzung (pronounced tser-set-soong) is the specific East German (GDR) term for a highly insidious form of psychological surveillance and harassment perfected by the Stasi (Ministry for State Security) in the 1970s and 1980s. While it literally translates to “decomposition,” “corrosion,” or “dissolution,” in the context of the GDR it refers to the systematic, covert destruction of a person’s mental health, reputation, and social life.

As applied by the Stasi, Zersetzung is a technique to subvert and undermine an opponent. The aim was to disrupt the target’s private or family life so they are unable to continue their “hostile-negative” activities towards the state. Typically, the Stasi would use collaborators to garner details from a victim’s private life. They would then devise a strategy to “disintegrate” the target’s personal circumstances—their career, their relationship with their spouse, their reputation in the community. They would even seek to alienate them from their children. The security service’s goal was to use Zersetzung to “switch off” regime opponents. After months and even years of Zersetzung a victim’s domestic problems grew so large, so debilitating, and so psychologically burdensome that they would lose the will to struggle against the East German state. Best of all, the Stasi’s role in the victim’s personal misfortunes remained tantalisingly hidden. The Stasi operations were carried out in complete operational secrecy. The service acted like an unseen and malevolent god, manipulating the destinies of its victims.

Key Aspects of Zersetzung in East Germany

• Purpose: To “switch off” or paralyze dissidents and potential “enemies of the state” without resorting to overt violence or mass incarceration, which would damage the GDR’s international reputation.

• Techniques: The Stasi used a wide range of methods to undermine the target’s self-confidence and sanity, including:

  • Gaslighting: Secretly entering homes and moving objects (e.g., changing alarm clocks, rearranging furniture, moving pictures) to make the target believe they were losing their minds.

  • Social Sabotage: Spreading rumours, misrepresenting the target as an evildoer, forging documents and data, and breaking up relationships (marriages, friendships) to isolate the target.

  • Career Destruction: Blocking educational opportunities, arranging job losses, and forcing unnecessary job changes.

  • Harassment: Constant surveillance, anonymous threatening letters, and mysterious phone calls.

• Implementation: Zersetzung was largely carried out by Inoffizielle Mitarbeiter (IM)—informal collaborators or informants—who lived in the target’s neighborhood or community. (In Canada, it is largely carried out by a large number of ‘contractors’ and police officers, often utilizing offshore entities to handle the technological aspects of the PSYOPS.)

• Victimization: It is estimated that around 5,000 people were “persistently victimized” by these methods, with many suffering long-term psychological damage.

Zersetzung was designed to leave no physical evidence, making it difficult for victims to prove they were being targeted, often leaving them feeling paranoid or isolated until their Stasi files were opened after reunification.

If I could identify one good outcome from my terrible experience, it is that I can relate to humanity on a much deeper level than ever before. Now I get how hard it is for many humans on Mother Earth. I now understand something about the kind of fantasies that one conjures up to survive this kind of onslaught. I now understand something more about the plight of the emotionally frozen and how that lives itself out somatically. I got stuck in a repetitive, frozen loop right after the first phone interception in 2020, that I am still thawing out from. I now understand suicidal ideation, a state of being that took root during an adverse reaction to prescriptions +. I had understood suicide as a concept, but not like this. I now understand more about the jealousy that courses through much of humanity. That is, that much of humanity is jealous of others because they have not actualized their own callings, gifts, and offerings. One of the unspoken themes that weaves through the book is the ways in which jealous others- and that includes very prominent political figures- were jealous of me and used my weakening as an opportunity to act it out. As a result of all of this, I now have a deeper understanding of how bloody messed up this species is. Not news to many of you, but I was riding so high as a creative for so long that I happily forgot.
