Dear Reader: This week I interviewed Canadian journalist Rob Wipond on the Enrealment Hour Podcast. It will be available soon. Rob has written an incredibly important book—Your Consent is Not Required: The Rise in Psychiatric Detentions, Forced Treatments, & Abusive Guardianships. I had assumed that the archaic approach that he details had faded away as we closed most asylums and became more conscious of psycho-therapeutic approaches and the adverse effects of psychotropic medications. I was wrong. There are many reasons for this, including but not limited to: the inordinate amount of power now granted to psychiatrists, the expanding definition of ‘mental illness’ that brings even more people into the psychiatric system (based on current definitions, every person alive will at some point suffer from mental illness), the continuing growth of psychotropic medications that alter brain chemistry (despite no credible evidence that alterations in brain chemistry caused the initially presenting ‘condition’), the ever-expanding influence of the Big Pharma lobby on the psychiatric profession, and the fact that we call it “mental illness” rather than “emotional illness.” In my view, the emphasis on the former only encourages the profession to fixate on the brain as the primary causal factor in most situations, and gives them license to focus on a pharmaceutical solution rather than a therapeutic one. This is a horrifying turn of events.
If you have had any experience with this system or are simply interested in this subject, here is a link to Rob’s book on Amazon. It is also available through any bookstore: Your Consent is Not Required
