ON SACRED PURPOSE: THE HOLY TAPESTRY OF YOU
A meaningfully purposeful life is not easy to find in a distracted world. In fact, it is somewhat of a miracle when it is found, given how challenging it is for many of us to be present for our experiences, let alone to find our purpose in the heart of them. When we do, we enter into a realm of unlimited possibility, our callings both buffering us against the madness of the world, and inviting us to live our lives with tremendous luminosity and delight.
In recent months, I have been focusing a lot on presence. That is, what does it mean to really be here, for this lifetime? Not here in a fragmented sense, not here in a singular sense, not here in only those ways that feel comfortable, but here in the most complete sense. Presence as a whole being, and a whole dimension, experience. Here for all of this.
Now, I want to focus our attention on that which often reveals itself in the heart of presence: sacred purpose. For many of us, clarifying our purpose is inextricably linked to our efforts to become more present. We strive to become more present, and in the heart of that quest, purpose comes to reveal itself. And then the actualization of purpose becomes a portal back to presence. It is often a choppy and incremental process, until it becomes something fluid and sustainable. When that happens, presence and purpose become utterly indistinguishable—the oceans of essence meet the individual droplet of meaning in our heart of hearts. We are both here, and we are clear as to why we are here. And the here and the why become the same experience. How beautiful.
In the way that I understand it, “sacred purpose” is that unique combination of callings, archetypes, lessons, significant relationships, and key emotional issues that each of us is here to clarify, to actualize, and to grow through. I believe that we all have callings, gifts, and offerings to excavate and express. We all have archetypes that live at the heart of our expansion. We all have ancestral imprints, patterns and issues that both obstruct us and provide the fuel for our transformation. Simply put, we are so much more than meets the eye. We glimpse these deeper layers in our dreamscapes and our nightmares—there is a much richer world within us than the one we encounter in our waking consciousness. This sublime world is a reflection of our sacred purpose—the profound significance of each birth, the deeper currents and rhythms that thread through us, the real why we are here. It may be difficult to discern, it may be covered in dirt, but it’s still inside, gleaming with profound possibility.
I often refer to our Sacred Purpose as our “soul-scriptures”—a soul-sourced blueprint that we enter this incarnation with. But this is my belief—it is not everyone’s. Even if you don’t buy the idea that our soul travels through time, or that you chose (or were given) a particular path for this incarnation, lean into the idea that you came into life with certain callings and gifts alive in you, certain issues and patterns that you would benefit from working through, various people that you need to grow toward or away from. In other words, that you are here with individual and relational intentionality coursing through your veins—even if it is not rooted in the soul’s journey. How does that resonate?
Let’s explore sacred purpose together, to see if it feels true to your experience. And if it is, to see what steps can be taken to clarify yours, and to bring more of it into your lived experience. We will begin more generally, and focus on each specific element of purpose in the months to come...
